Children Gaining Weight in Summer was news to me! I would had thought the opposite, children losing weight during Summer like we did growing up. Playing outside, swimming, going to neighbors to play with friends.
According to a recent article, our children in America are gaining weight over Summer break. Children Gaining Summer Weight. It seems schools are doing a better job of offering healthier choices than what children have available at home.
Children also have longer hours of unscheduled time during the days while parents are working, which allows them more time for snacking and sitting in front of an electronic device.

Love and accept your child at any weight, size, or shape. During childhood, growth is unpredictable at best. It comes in spurts and a once-skinny child can suddenly plump up while his height catches up with his weight. There’s a lot of pressure in our society to be thin, and you might be tempted to put your child on a diet during a growth spurt, but that won’t be helpful and may even cause emotional and physical damage.
Instead, help your child maintain his weight until his height catches up. The best way to do that is to teach good healthy eating habits and encourage your child to be active; try yoga DVDs for kids and emphasize activities that keep you all moving and create healthy outlets for all that kid energy.
Children are smart, helping them to understand logic, reaping and sowing, cause and effect will empower them to make better choices. Not perfect, just better. For example, learning together about their bodies and what good nutrition does immediately and long term, also flip side, what proven affects nutritionally bankrupt food can have.
The single biggest cause of type 2 diabetes in children is extra weight. In the U.S., nearly 1 out of every 3 children is overweight. Once a child gets too heavy, she’s twice as likely to get diabetes.
Now is the time to start making changes for our children! For the first time in history our children a predicted not to outlive their parents.
Education, joint efforts and encouragement. The best way to do that is to teach good healthy eating habits and encourage your child to be active. Include them in making better choices, set up agreements and rewards.
