Children Gaining Weight in Summer was news to me! I would had thought the opposite, children losing weight during Summer like we did growing up. Playing outside, swimming, going to neighbors to play with friends.

According to a recent article, our children in America are gaining weight over Summer break. Children Gaining Summer Weight. It seems schools are doing a better job of offering healthier choices than what children have available at home.

What are some healthy alternatives? Get your children involved in making better choices.Ways to Get Kids to Eat Healthier

Love and accept your child at any weight, size, or shape. During childhood, growth is unpredictable at best. It comes in spurts and a once-skinny child can suddenly plump up while his height catches up with his  weight. There’s a lot of pressure in our society to be thin, and you might  be tempted to put your child on a diet during a growth spurt, but that won’t be helpful and may even cause emotional and physical damage.

Instead, help your child maintain his weight until his height catches up. The best way to do that is to teach good healthy eating habits and encourage your child to be active; try yoga DVDs for kids and emphasize activities that keep you all moving and create healthy outlets for all that kid energy.

Children are smart, helping them to understand logic, reaping and sowing, cause and effect will empower them to make better choices. Not perfect, just better. The single biggest cause of type 2 diabetes in children is extra weight. In the U.S., nearly 1 out of every 3 children is overweight. Once a child gets too heavy, she’s twice as likely to get diabetes.
